As we know, Umrah is one of the most beloved acts of worships in the eyes of the Creator. Shortly after the Hajj season comes to an end, the season of Umrah opens up to the world to visit the blessed land of Arabia; and in particular the house of Allah (SWT) known as Masjid-Al-Haraam in Mecca. As Muslims, we should make sacrifices from our lives in order to fulfill such a reward-filling task as much as we can in hopes that Allah (SWT) forgives our past sins and makes us pure believers & good-hearted people.
In Arabic, the word Umrah is derived from I’timaar which means a visit to a populated place. However, Umrah in Islamic Sharia teminology, means paying a visit to Ka’bah, performing Tawaaf (circumambulation) around it, walking between al-Safaa and al-Marwah seven times.
Umrah is a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, performed by Muslims that can be undertaken at any time of the year, after assuming Ihram (a sacred state), either from a Miqat like Zu’l-Hulafa, Juhfa, Qarnu 'l-Manazil, Yalamlam, Zat-i-'Irq, Ibrahim Mursia, or a place in Hill.
It is sometimes called the 'minor pilgrimage' or 'minor Hajj' and is a Sunnah. Though Umrah is not compulsory, it is highly recommended for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it. One who steps out in the path of Umrah is considered a pilgrim until he reaches back home.
There are two types of Umrah, depending on whether one wishes to combine the Umrah with Haj.
o al-Umrat al mufradah refers to Umrah that is performed independently of Hajj
o Umrat al-tammatu refers to Umrah that is performed in conjunction with Hajj. More precisely, the rituals of the Umrah are performed first and the Hajj rituals are performed after
There are 4 Pillars of Umrah :
o Ihraam : which is assumed at the Meeqaat
o Tawaaf : around the House
o Sa'y : walking between As-Safaa and Al-Marwah, which consists of seven circuits
o Tahal-lul : which means coming out of the state of Ihraam; becoming lawful what was previously prohibited during Ihraam
During Umrah, pilgrims do not go to Minaa, Arafaat & Muzdalifah or throw pebbles on the Jamrahs (stone pillars representing devils) or offer animal sacrifice. These rites are only performed during Hajj
It is extremely critical and important that a person who intends to perform Umrah learn the basics of this act of worship including the obligatory actions and what makes Umrah null & void and what should be done in case there is a chance to compensate for mistakes.
